Abstract
<PICT:0801806/III/1> Apparatus for use in gas phase exothermic catalytic processes comprises a catalytic gauze 14, or a catalyst-supporting gauze, in the gas inlet chamber of a multi-tubular heat exchanger adjacent the tube inlet plate 2, the gauze being supported from the tube plate by a series of heat-resisting elements 16 arranged between the tube holes. The supporting elements may be metal bars connected together in groups or cruciform shapes made of fire clay. A refractory insulating layer 15, through which the heat-exchange tubes pass at 4a, may protect the tube plate from hot gases. Bearer bars transverse to the elements may be arranged between the tube plate and the supporting elements to provide a space for mixing of the gases leaving the gauge. The space around the tubes is supplied with water from an external drum used for the generation of steam. Methanol is converted to formaldehyde at 500-650 DEG C. using a silver gauze or ammonia to nitric oxide at 800 DEG C. or more using a platinum-containing gauze.
