Abstract

1387469 Tubular heat exchangers; headers DAIMLER-BENZ AG 24 July 1972 [30 July 1971] 34546/72 Heading F4S In an air heater comprising nests of tubes 27, 28 extending between header chambers 29, 30, 31 and surrounded by a housing 26 through which hot waste turbine gases are passed, the parts 40 of the header chamber walls exposed to heavy thermal stresses are provided with expansion corrugations 38 in the region where the tubes are connected to the header chambers, individual expansion corrugations 38 being inserted into and secured to associated cutouts in the chamber walls. As shown, each corrugation 38 extends inwardly into the interior of the header chamber, the corrugation being covered by a plate 43 only one side 44 of which is welded to the header wall. In an alternative embodiment (see Figs. 5-7, not shown), the perforated wall portion (45) of each header into which the ends of the tubes are secured is provided with outwardly extending corrugations (49) each of which projects into the heater housing and passes through some of the tubes (46). The corrugations (49) are secured by welding into slits (50, 51), respectively provided in the perforated wall portion (45) and in the tubes (46). The tubes may be arranged in an annular array (see Figs. 8-10), the hot gases flowing radially outwardly through the annular array between a central inlet aperture (56) and a laterally disposed outlet aperture (59).
