Abstract

<PICT:0728521/III/1> Apparatus for carrying out reactions in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst comprizes a vessel 1 containing a series of welded tubes 14 (e.g. of V-shape, as shown) for a heat transfer agent, the tubes being connected at one end to an upper series of headers 5, and at the other end to a lower series of headers 6; the headers 5 are connected by pipes 5a to a drum 3 arranged in the upper part of the vessel, and the headers 6 by pipes 6a to one or more inlet mains 4; the heat transfer agent is circulated, for example by a pump, from the drum 3 back to the inlet 4 through a pipe or pipes in which a heat exchanger may be provided. The U-tubes may be in groups of three, cradled one within one another, and are arranged equidistantly over the cross-section of the vessel. The vessel 1 and the heat transfer pipes are adapted to withstand pressure. When water is used as a cooling agent, steam may be withdrawn from drum 3. The catalyst is supported by hinged perforated plates 9, the reactant gases entering at 13 and leaving at 12. In a modification (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) the tubes 14 are straight and the lower headers 6 are arranged at the foot of the vessel 1.
