Abstract

801,746. Gas turbines. LEIGH, L. P. Oct. 10, 1955, No. 28756/55. Cla.ss 110 (3). [Also in Groups XXIX and XXXVII] Ice formation in duct 15 of an aircraft jet engine is prevented by providing one or more pitot members 35 which each normally produces a takeoff pressure different from the ambient pressure to keep open an electric switch; when ice closes one of the pilot openings the switch closes and opens solenoid-operated valves 24 and 24a which supply hot air from the engine to heat-exchangers H, H2 supplying heated air to a header D in the jet inlet and to the members 35 respectively. If ice-formation persists a valve 24b may be operated manually to bring heat exchanger H3 into operation. The electrical operation of valves 24 and 24a is conditional on the closure of a switch 68 actuated by a negative-pressure device 72 so that the heaters are only operated when airflow in the duct reaches a certain value. Specification 771,153 is referred to.
