Abstract
681,144. Ventilation. GARRETT CORPORATION. March 15, 1948 [April 5, 1947], No. 7784/48. Class 137 [Also in Group XIII] In air-cooling apparatus in which air from a compressor 11 is cooled, before .delivery to an enclosure such as an aircraft cabin 10, in cooling means including a heat exchanger 12, part of the air leaving the cooling means is returned to the heat exchanger to act as a coolant, the amount of air so returned being controlled by a characteristic, e.g. the pressure, of the air which has passed through the cooling means. The cooling means includes a turbine 29 which is driven by, and so further cools, the cooled air leaving the heat exchanger 12. In the form shown, a damper 36 in the passage 34, through which part of the cooled air leaving the turbine 29 returns to the heat exchanger, is controlled by a diaphragm 41 moving in response to changes in the difference between the pressure of the air in the aircraft cabin 10 to which the cooled air is supplied and the external atmospheric pressure. Coolant air from the external atmosphere is admitted to the heat exchanger through an inlet 19 controlled by a damper 47 which is opened and closed by changes in the temperature of the air in the chamber 10. The damper 47 is linked to a damper 45 which controls a passage 44 through which cooled air from the heat-exchanger can byepass the turbine 29. When the temperature in the chamber 10 is high, and the pressure difference from the external atmosphere is low, the valves 19, 36 are open and the valve 45 is closed, to produce maximum cooling. The turbine 29 drives a fan 31 in the outlet 22 for coolant air. A partition 35 may divide the coolant space in the heat exchanger into two parts. Specifications 654,622 and 604,301 are referred to.
