Abstract
729,626. Ventilation. GARRETT CORPORATION. July 20,1953 [Aug. 1, 1952], No. 20039/53. Class 137. [Also in Group XIII] Apparatus for cooling a gas, e.g. air, supplied to a flying suit 33 or other enclosure, comprises a conduit 24, an indirect-contact heat exchanger 12, a duct 28, a second cooler (e.g. an expansion turbine 29), and an outlet passage 31 leading to the enclosure, all connected in series, a branch passage 47 connecting the outlet of the second cooler to the heat exchanger 12, and a by-pass 35 connecting the duct 28 to the outlet passage 31 downstream of the branch passage 47; the flow of air through the branch passage 47 is controlled by means responsive to one of the characteristics of the gas in the apparatus. In the form shown, a valve 50 is actuated by a motor 51 controlled by a regulator 78 described in Specification 687,154, [Group XXXV]. The regulator 78 is controlled by the rate of change of temperatures influencing thermistors 80a and 80b, and by the temperature influencing a thermistor 81a or 81b, so that the temperature of the air supplied to the suit 33 is maintained at a required level. In the heat-exchanger 12, air from the branch passage 47 cools the air from the conduit 24. The turbine 29 drives a fan 16 which impels coolant air through another heat exchanger 10, in which compressed air from a conduit 19 is cooled before entering the conduit 24. A valve 37 in the by-pass 35 is closed or opened (by a motor 36 controlled by a pressure-actuated switch 56) according to whether the pressure of the air entering the heat exchanger 10, or the difference between that pressure and ambient pressure or cabin pressure, is above or below a certain level, so that either none or all of the air supplied to the suit 33 passes through the by-pass 35. A valve 39 in the duct 28 is controlled by the difference between the pressure of the air leaving the turbine 29 and ambient pressure. A non- return valve 45 is provided in the passage 31 upstream of the junction of the by-pass 35. Automatic pressure-control and pressure-relief valves 99 and 102, and manually operable bleed and pressure-control valves 101 and 103 are provided.
