Abstract

721,676. Ventilating aircraft. GARRETT CORPORATION. Aug. 20, 1951 [Aug. 26, 1950], No. 19547/51. Class 137. [Also in Group XIII] In apparatus in which air supplied to an enclosure is cooled by coolant air in a heat exchanger and by means in which energy of the air is converted into mechanical energy, air moving means (driven by the energy-converting means) and air-flow inducing means, receiving air discharged from the air-moving means, together circulate the coolant air through the heat exchanger. In the form shown, a compressor 11 delivers air to an enclosure 10 partly through heat exchangers 14, 15 and partly through a by-pass 25. The air leaving the heat exchangers passes partly through a turbine 17 and partly through a second by-pass 27. The turbine drives a fan 19 propelling coolant air leaving the heat-exchanger 15 through a duct 21 acting as an injector on coolant air leaving the other heat exchanger 14. The flow of air through the by-passes 25, 27 is controlled by valves 28, 29 moved by a torque actuator actuated by means responsive to the temperature of the air in the enclosure 10. There may be a lost-motion connection between the two valves, so that, for example, the valve 28 opens and closes before the valve 29. A check valve 24 prevents reversal of flow of coolant air through the heat exchanger 14. In another form, the heat exchanger 15 and by-passes 25, 27 are omitted, and coolant air passes directly to the fan 19 from the inlet passage 18. The outlet passage for coolant from the heat exchanger 14 contains a venturi between the heat exchanger and the injector. The venturi is stated to restrict excessive flow of coolant air. In a modification it is replaced by a valve which may be actuated automatically or manually. Specifications 604,301 and 654,678 are referred to.
