Abstract
817,975. Ventilating aircraft. GARRETT CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1956 [Dec. 23, 1955], No. 38387/56. Class 137 [Also in Group XIII] In a, system comprising a gas-turbineoperated air compressor and a heat extractor for supplying conditioned air through ducts to a space such as the pilot and passenger cabins of an aeroplane, the air flow through the ducts is regulated by valves at least some of which are controlled in accordance with a predetermined temperatures characteristic of the gas turbine e.g. in accordance with the maximum and minimum permissible working temperatures in a part of the turbine. In the system shown, ram air is compressed in a compressor 13 driven by a gas-turbine 12. A proportion of the air from compressor 13 flows through a duct 19 from which the flow, depending upon the position of the control valves, may be through a by-pass duct 32 or through a heat extractor 20, compressor 25 of a refrigerating unit 21, heat extractor 22 and expansion turbine 26, the air passing ultimately to ducts 30, 31 leading to the cabins. The coolant for heat extractors 20, 22 comprises ambient air circulated therethrough and through ducts 18 by a fan 17. The air flow to the cabins is dependant upon the operation of valves 34, 40, 41, 45 the valves 34, 40 being operated together by means 35 controlled either manually from the pilot's cabin or automatically from the passenger cabin. The valves 41, 45 are so actuated respectively by heat sensitive elements 43, 44 disposed within the gas turbine as to cause the turbine to work within its most efficient temperature range. If air below a predetermined temperature is delivered by the expansion turbine 26 a thermal element 47 in the duct 27 leading from the turbine actuates a valve 48 allowing warm air to flow through a bleed line 50 to the duct 27. A water separator 28 is provided to remove moisture from the cooled air before its delivery through ducts 30, 31 to the cabins. A thermoresistor 46 in the air delivery passage 30 is connected with the control means 35 in the cabins and serves to prevent over-control and excessive fluctuation of the temperature in the cabin.
