Abstract

Olefin polymers produced by low pressure polymerization processes are purified by vigorously agitating with an aqueous solution of a detergent. Specified polymers are those of ethylene, propylene, butylene or mixtures thereof prepared at pressures below 500 atmospheres in the presence of (1) mixtures comprising aluminium trichloride, titanium tetrachloride and aluminium powder, (2) chromium oxide on a 90 per cent silica-10 per cent alumina support, optionally stabilized with strontium oxide, (3) an oxide of a Group VI metal on a support, optionally in the presence of an alkali metal, and (4) a compound of a metal of Groups IVa, Va, VIa, VIIa or VIII, together with (a) a Group I, II or III metal, e.g. zinc or aluminium or an alloy thereof, (b) an organo-metallic compound or hydride of a Group I, II or III metal, tin or lead, or (c) an organic boron compound or addition complex thereof. (b) may be in the form of a molecular complex with an ether, thioether or amine or with an alkali metal hydride, alkyl, aryl or halide. (c) may be a complex of an alkali metal hydride with a boron compound of the form BR1, R11, R111, where R1, R11 and R111 represent hydrocarbon radicals, alkoxy or aryloxy groups or hydrogen atoms. The polymerization may be conducted in the presence of solvents, e.g. xylene and iso-octane, optionally in the absence of air. The detergent may be ionic, e.g. sodium stearate, or non-ionic, e.g. condensates of ethylene oxide with octyl phenol and octyl cresol. Before washing with detergent, the polymers may be triturated with an alcohol, e.g. methanol or butanol, or dilute aqueous mineral acid. Preferably, the polymers are stripped by blowing with steam before or during the washing with detergent, and may be freed from detergent by washing with, preferably hot, water. Further washing with dilute aqueous solutions of ammonia or colourless amines, e.g. trimethylamine, may be effected. Specifications 799,392, 799,823 and 801,031 are referred to.
