Abstract

Olefins are polymerized at low pressure with a catalyst formed by reacting a compound of an element of the A sub-groups of the Mendeleeff Table with a silane or a derivative in which up to 3 of the hydrogen atoms of each silicon atom are replaced by halogen, nitrogen or oxygen. Specified catalyst components are titanium tetrachloride; silanes such as monosilane, disilane, trisilane, polysilanes and mixtures thereof, prosiloxane (SiH2O), SiH3Br, SiH2Cl2, SiH3,O,SiH3 and (SiH3)3N. The polymerization may be in a hydrocarbon medium or in bulk. Monomers disclosed are ethylene, propylene, butene, pentene, methyl-butene, methyl and dimethylpentenes and methyl-hexene. The catalyst and medium used preferably are purified before the polymerization reaction. In examples the following ingredients are added at the end of the reaction; butanol, hydrocarbons, sodium hydroxide, surface active agent and steam.
