Abstract

801,510. Soldering. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. Jan. 10, 1955 [Jan. 11, 1954], No. 754/55. Class 83 (4). A method of soldering comprises producing a flow of molten solder taken from a point below the surface of a body 26 of molten solder, discharging the flow from a port 30, and bringing an article 10 to be soldered into contact with the flow. The article 10 may be an assembly of electrical components 14, 15 having wire leads 16 extending through a chassis plate of insulating material for connection to conductors 11. A conveyer C first supports the article so that each joint to be soldered is located above a felt or like wick 44 having its lower end submerged in flux 39. An electrical heater 45 then preheats the assembly before it passes to a position above a number of solder ports 30 arranged to correspond with the joints to be soldered. The solder and flux are contained in lagged and heated receptacles 25, 38 supported by a platform T raised periodically by a cam mechanism CF to effect the fluxing and soldering operations. A pump 29 supplies the receptacle 25 from a third lagged and heated receptacle 20 to which the overflow from the spouts 30 returns by way of a conduit 31. The tips of the flux wicks 44 and the mouths of the solder spouts 30 may terminate at different elevations and the article may pass over several soldering machines in succession.
