Abstract
801,306. Gravity-separation apparatus. TROMP, K. F. May 27, 1957 [July 24, 1956], No. 16726/57. Class 46 [Also in Group II] For automatically controlling the maximum density of the relatively clear over flow and/or the minimum density of the thicker under flow from a thickener, settler or other receptacle containing a suspension, the receptacle is provided with two weirs, one stationary and the other movable vertically under the control of the density of an upper layer of the suspension, for example by means of a float. As shown, suspension enters a thickener 8 through a shaft 6, and a float 12 determines whether the clear overflow leaves over a weir 11 carried by the float, or over a fixed weir 9 for recycling by a pump 4. The thick underflow is pumped into a second receptacle 19 in which a float 22 determines whether it leaves over a fixed weir 20, or over a weir 21 carried by the float to be returned to the bottom of the thickener 8. The degree of control may be varied by adding or removing weights to or from the float-carrying arms 13, 23.
