Abstract
801,162. Pipe couplings ; pipe stoppers. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Sept. 6, 1956 [Nov. 1, 1955], No. 27388/56. Class 99(1). A coupling element 16 for closing the end of a fluid flow conduit 11, e.g. in a refrigeration system, has a bore 17, the cross-section of one portion of which is such as to embrace the conduit in a fluid-tight manner, a fusible plug 24 in the bore and means for retaining the fusion products of the plug to prevent those products from being entrained in fluid flowing subsequently through the bore, an end seating surface 23, and a member contructed to be secured to a complementary member on a coupling element 28 secured to a second conduit and having a complementary seating surface 36. A fluid passage between the coupled elements is formed by fusion of the plug. As shown, the elements 16, 28 are provided with mating frusto-conical seating surfaces 23, 36 and are coupled together by a flanged collar 40 screwed on to the element 16. The plugs are of a bismuth-lead alloy known as " Cerrobend " (Registered Trade Mark) and are in contact with grids 25 the surfaces of the latter being tinned or coated with a bismuthlead-alloy so that the material of the plugs when melted flows along the surfaces of the strips forming the grids and becomes bonded thereto. In a modification, the plugs are comprised in the grids by applying over the intertices of the grids a thin coating of the fusible material.
