Abstract
An aqueous emulsion comprises a hydrocarbon polymer and the addition product of an unsaturated hydrocarbon polymer with either maleic anhydride, chloromaleic anhydride or citraconic anhydride, neutralized with an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkali metal carbonate, ammonium hydroxide, tetra-substituted ammonium hydroxide, or ammonium carbonate, or an organic base. The unsaturated hydrocarbon polymer may be a Friedel-Crafts polymer of 97 per cent isobutylene with 3 per cent isoprene, or 10-90 per cent isobutylene and 90-10 per cent styrene, or a polymer of a steam-cracked petroleum fraction, or polymers of butadiene, or copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile. The basic compounds may be a hydroxide or carbonate of sodium, potassium, lithium, rubidium, calcium or ammonium or an amine or a tetra-substituted ammonium hydroxide. Preferably, from 0.1 to 5.0 per cent of the anhydride is used based on the weight of the polymer.
