Abstract
800,039. Valves. SMITH & SONS (NOTTINGHAM), Ltd., S. July 19, 1956 [Aug. 12, 1955], No. 23357/55. Class 135. In a valve for gases or liquids, particularly for fire mains, a resilient sleeve 4 of rubber or the like clamped at each end in the valve body 1 is pinched against a fixed streamlined core 9 within the sleeve by an axially-movable closure member 12 actuated by a hand-wheel 20 through screw or other means. At the inlet end the sleeve 4 is serrated and is secured by a cone 6 against a fixed cylindrical member 13 guiding the member 12. At the outlet end the sleeve 4 is clamped by a ring 8 supporting the core 9 through radial webs. A nut 17 on the handwheel 20 is located for rotation on the valve body 1 and engages four threaded lugs 16 on the member 12, the lugs projecting through axial slots in the body 1. The resilient sleeve 4 tends to seat on the core 9 and is distended by the fluid pressure when the member 12 is retracted. The engaging surface of the core 9 may be of resilient material. In the fully open position the sleeve 4 is supported by the bulbous region 11 of the body 1, the end of the member 12 being flared so that when fully retracted it forms a smooth curve with the guide member 13 and body 1.
