Abstract
800,002. Ammunition feed mechanism. BOFORS AKTIEBOLAGET. Feb. 6, 1957 [Feb. 22, 1956], No. 4092/57. Class 92 Relates to apparatus for conveying rounds of ammunition from a magazine to a hoist and comprising a rotary drum with compartments that are open towards the side of the drum so that each compartment during a step-by-step rotation of the drum is made to pass a position in which it can be fed with a round and a position in which the compartment forms a part of a hoist through which a round in the compartment can be removed. According to the invention, the compartments 10-15, Fig. 2, of the drum 6 are arranged in groups 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 of equal numbers and are such that all the compartments of a group can be fed simultaneously from parallel feed shafts 5. The drum 6 can be provided with a greater number of compartments and more feeding shafts can be arranged around the drum 6. The compartment 15, Figs. 2 and 4, forms an extension of a hoist drum 7 through which the rounds are raised by an endless chain 27 having lugs 31 which engage under the rounds through a slot 29 in a wall 9 encircling the drum 6 and a slot 30 in the hoist drum 7. In each compartment is a spring plunger 17 adapted to prevent outward movement of the round during rotation of the drum and at the innermost part of each compartment is a pivoted lug 19 which in every position except that in which the compartment forms an extension of the hoist extends over the rim of the round and prevents it tipping. The lugs 19 are operated by a cam (not shown). The wall 9 encircling the drum 6 is extended to form two parallel walls enclosing the two feed shafts 5 which are separated by a T-shaped rail 8, the upper flange of which engages over the rims of the rounds. The feeding means consists of four feeding members 21-24, Fig. 3, of which members 21, 23 are rotatable by not axially movable bars provided with flaps 25 while the members' 22, 24 are bars which are both rotatable and movable axially and have flaps 26. The members 22, 24 with the flaps 26 in the gripping position shown can convey a distance corresponding to the distance between the flaps, the flaps 25 of the members 31, 23 being vertical during such movement. At the end of the movement the flaps 25 are turned down to prevent the rounds from tipping and at the same time the flaps 26 are turned up to permit a return movement of the members 22, 24. The whole feeding movement is carried out during the time the drum 6 is moved round two steps and during a pause when a round is removed. Groups of three compartments may be employed and fed by three feeding shafts. Additional feeding shafts 32, Fig. 5 (not shown), may be used to feed ammunition of a kind different from that in the shafts 5.
