A press for bending metal sheets comprising an hydraulically operated table or plate carrying a bending tool(s) and a stationary table or plate carrying the other bending tool(s) is characterized in that the moving table is operated by a central jack disposed on the axis of the press and is guided by the body of said jack. A movable lower table 1 is raised towards a fixed upper table 5 by a central hydraulic jack 2, being guided in such movement by the body 3 of the jack 2 and by a guide 4 which may constitute the body of another central jack acting on the table 1. To allow slight oscillation of the table 1 in the direction of the arrows f, f Fig. 2, the table 1 is loosely bolted at 7 to shoes 6 sliding on the jack body 3 and bears against rounded faces of bars 8. The top and/or bottom table may be made in two parts, Figs. 3, 5, a first part 11 supported on uprights 12, 121 by abutments 13, 13<SP>1</SP> and a second part 14, carrying the bending tool, supported at points 15, 151 on the first part 11, the points 15, 151 being half the distance apart of the abutments 13, 131. A device for limiting the stroke of the press to produce a partly bent sheet comprises a rod 41, Fig. 8, controlling a valve 40 in the piston head 39 of the jack, a bell-crank 42 adjustable by a threaded rod 44 forming a stop for the rod 41. The lower press plate 50 in Figs. 8, 10 and 11 may be guided on the jack bodies by rollers 51, 52 mounted on axles 53 slidable in grooves in members 57 secured to the plate 50, the axles 53 being spring-urged towards the jack bodies by a rod 59 having a knife-blade end and urged forward by a stack of Belleville washers. A switch 62 may be closed by the rod 59 to stop the machine if the plate 50 is tilted too much.
