Class 75(3) An ignition device comprises a pilot gas burner connected to a gas supply by a flexible connection and a valve for controlling the gas supply to the burner mouth where the gas is ignited, when the valve is opened, by sparks produced by relatively displaceable spark points, included in a choke coil circuit, the points are opened after being closed. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a synthetic plastic casing 1 containing a choke coil 2 and dry batteries 3 and having mounted thereon a terminal block 8 carrying flexible tongues 4, 4a is mounted on a gas stove, wall or bench. A striker plate 7 mounted on a gas cock housing 14 has a slot 6 provided with depressions 7a on each side thereof adjacent the ends 5 of the tongues 4, 4a. A gas torch 9 normally supported in the inoperative position with its end in an aperture 18 in a projection 17 of a gas cock plug 16 by a flange 10 resting on a lug 18a is turned through a right angle when the torch is to be ignited and its end 8a is inserted and moved downwardly through the slot 6 to complete an electric circuit between the plate 7 and a tongue 4 or 4a which tongues 4 or 4a will create a spark as they leave the torch end 8a to ignite the gas issuing therefrom. In a modification shown in Fig. 4 a portable pistol-shaped metal casing 19 contains dry batteries 3 and a choke coil 23. The coil 23 and a flexible striker 24 or a striker 24 electrically connected to the coil 23 are moved forward against a spring 28 by a lever 27 which is mounted on and opens a gas cock 30 to complete and then break an electric circuit between a. flange 31 on the gas pilot tube 29 and the striker 24 and thus ignite the gas issuing from the tube 29.
