Abstract
799,164. Sewing machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and BARTON, G. C. July 30, 1956 [July 30, 1955], No. 22088/55. Class 112 In a sewing machine for attaching together the insole, welt and upper of a shoe, a carrier 4 for a curved hooked needle 2 and a carrier 12 for a needle-guide 8 are mounted on a fixed pivot 6 for oscillation in respectivel spaced-apart vertical planes, and a link 40, which is pivoted at 42 to carrier 4, is provided with a pin 46 engaging within a slot 16 formed in carrier 12 and also engaging within a fixed cam-slot 38, the arrangement being such that pin 46 drives carrier 12 during part of the movement of carrier 4, but rides idly in said slots during the remainder of said movement without imparting drive to carrier 12. As shown, slot 16 is straight and slot 38, which is formed in a block 36 inset in a fixed supporting-bracket 30, has a portion A concentric with pivot 6 and a straight portion B. During the early part of the piercing stroke of the needle, pin 46 moves in the curved portion A and thereby reacts with the edge of slot 16 to drive carrier 12. When the needle approaches the work, slot 16 becomes aligned with the straight portion B, whereby the needle moves idly along slot 16, carrier 12 then having moved into contact with a stop member 48 provided on bracket 30. Similarly, carrier 12 remains stationary during the first part of the withdrawal stoke of the needle. Carrier 4 is held axially in position upon pivot 6 by means of a segment retainer 22. Drive is imparted to carrier 4 via an arm (not shown) coupled to a ball stud 32 mounted on the carrier. Specification 418.823 is referred to.
