799,077. Friction brakes. SEELIGER, K. Jan. 20, 1956 [Feb. 2, 1955], No. 1918/56. Class 103 (1)., A device for braking rotating machine parts such as electric motor shafts, driving pinions, drums and the like, comprises a drum member 13, keyed so as to rotate with the shaft 1 to be braked, and having a friction ring 12 on its axial inner face engaged by the conical faces of parts 3 and 4, which are constrained against relative twist by hoop spring 17, the axial force with which the parts 3 and 4 engage the ring 12 being adjustable by nut 15 acting through a bell spring 14. The axially extending outer face of part 4 is engaged by a clamp roller braking device comprising a roller race 5, 6 by which the member 4 may be locked to the ring 8 when such ring is able to move from its central position in which it may be held by means such as a pole piece 9 acted upon by magnet coil 11. Rotation of shaft 1 in either direction may thus be prevented by simply freeing member 8 from its central position, the degree of retardation exerted by the parts 3 and 4 on the shaft 1 through drum 13 being variable by an adjustment of nut 15.
