Abstract
Terephthalic acid is prepared by oxydizing p-di-isopropyl benzene with an oxygen-containing gas in a medium consisting mainly of an organic acid in which the p-di-isopropyl benzene is soluble and in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a manganese compound together with a lead compound. Saturated fatty acids containing 2-8 carbon atoms are suitable solvents, and acetic, propionic, butyric and caproic acids are preferred. Suitable lead and manganese compounds are the lead and manganese salts of organic acids, and the acetates are specified. A suitable concentration of each of the catalysts is 1 per cent, based on the hydrocarbon, but other amounts can be used and the ratio of lead to manganese may also vary. In examples: (i) air is passed through a mixture of p-di-isopropyl benzene and caproic acid containing 1 per cent manganese acetate and 1 per cent lead acetate at 180 DEG C. for 60 hours; (ii) as (1) using butyric acid and a reaction temperature of 160 DEG C.; (iii) as (ii) using a reaction temperature of 140 DEG C.; (iv) oxygen is passed under pressure into a mixture of p-di-isopropyl benzene and acetic acid containing lead and manganese acetates at 180 DEG C.
