Abstract

798,054. Glass-working. OWENS-ILLINOIS GLASS CO. Oct. 25, 1956, No. 32496/56. Class 56. A hollow glass article A is deposited from the forming apparatus on to a head 13 which is then lowered to a position wherein the article is level with a removal conveyer 61 and during its downward movement the article is simultaneously cooled. When the article is first deposited on the head its base is within an annular plate 72, Fig. 4, and is somewhat spaced from the wall of the ring aperture so as to provide an annular passage for cooling air, supplied through passages 87 communicating with the hollow shaft 11 supporting the head, to act on the outside of the article. As the head descends, a rod 78 slidable therein engages the stationary base 10 and raises the plate 75 and associated support 74 relatively to the head to raise the article to the level of the top of the annular plate 72 of the head so that the article can be moved on to the conveyer. Internal cooling of the article is effected by air passing through a nozzle 64 the nozzle being carried by a hollow shaft 34 through which the cooling air is passed the shaft being rotatable to move the nozzle into and out of register with the article and also being movable axially to follow the vertical movements of the head 13 which are effected by fluid pressure under the control of a valve 24.
