Abstract

1441771 Stemmed glassware manufacture OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 21 Sept 1973 44403/73 Heading C1M In the manufacture of a glass article 10 having a hollow bowl 11, a base 12 and interconnecting neck 13, a charge of molten glass is delivered to and shaped as by a plunger (21) in an open mouth parison mould (20) into an elongated parison P with a conically shaped hollow body merging with an end portion whose mass is sufficient to produce the neck 13 and base 12; the parison P, held by neck ring 21a, is transferred in a vertical position into a finishing mould 22 having a hollow bowl portion 27, an intermediate neck portion 28 and a base portion 29 including a bottom plate 30, the parison P is allowed to sag under gravity so that the lower end 33 of the hollow part is adjacent the neck portion 28 of the mould 22 when gas pressure is applied to the parison P to force that lower end 33 into contact with the neck portion 28 before any substantial amount of the glass accumulates on the bottom plate 30 and then further gas pressure is applied to force the parison outwardly into contact with mould portion 27 to form the hollow bowl 11 and the bottom plate 30 is moved upwardly to face the end portion of the parison P against the base portion 29 to form the base 12 and neck 13. Pre ferably the parison P is continuously rotated while enclosed in the finishing mould 22, but for patterned glasses (Figs. 17 and 20 to 22, not shown) the parison is not rotated and either the bowl portion 27 or the neck portion 28 have appropriate indentations and for square based glasses (Figs. 18 and 19, not shown) the base portion 29 and bottom plate 30 are appropriately shaped. For internal spiral ribs (Figs. 23 and 24, not shown) in the bowl, a ribbed plunger is used in forming the parison P. Apparatus (known) (Figs. 15 and 16, not shown) for elongating the neck portion 13 to form a stem is also disclosed. A rotary press and blow machine (Fig. 25) may be used. Apparatus (Figs. 12 and 13) is also disclosed for upward movement of the bottom plate 30 by an air motor (36) movable into and out of position therebelow on a spring supported arm (37), the spring (41) being compressed as resistance of the glass is met and thereby controls the force upwards. Flow control valves are arranged in the flow lines to the motor 36 so that adjustments can be made for individual operations.
