Abstract
560,576. Making hollow glassware. BRITISH HARTFORD-FAIRMONT SYNDICATE, Ltd. Oct. 2, 1942, No. 13882. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1941. [Class 56] Relates to the method of forming hollow glass parisons, described in Specification 532,778, in which a charge of molten glass falling into an inverted parison mould is stopped. at a predetermined level and supported by the upper part of a plunger which is moving upwards into the mould cavity. According to the present invention, compressed air is applied. to the mould cavity above the molten glass to force the glass down into the space around the rising plunger and into the ring mould. The charge of glass may be dropped through a funnel 1, Fig. 1, into the mould cavity 2 and is supported by the tip of a plunger 6 which is moving upwards into the mould cavity 2 through the ring mould 4. The-plunger tends to lift the charge of glass, but the lifting force is opposed by the pressure of compressed air which is admitted above the glass through a blowhead 9, Fig. 3, applied to the funnel 1. -The pressure of the air causes the glass to flow down around the plunger into the ring mould 4, while the plunger causes the upper level of the glass to rise nearly to the upper end of the mould cavity 2. Next, the funnel 1 is removed and the blowhead 9 is brought down to close the cavity 2, as shown in Fig. 6. At the same time, the plunger 6 is withdrawn and compressed air is applied through the ring mould 4 to expand the cavity 14 formed by the plunger on the glass. The blowhead 9 is now removed, the parison 15 is allowed time to reheat at its closed end, and the mould is opened to allow the parison, supported by the ring mould as shown in Fig. 8, to be puff blown. Finally, the parison is reverted and enclosed in a finishing mould where it is blown to its final shape. The mechanism for operating the plunger is substantially the same as described in Specification 560,672.
