Abstract

421,563. Glass manufacture. RANKIN, C. H., and RANKIN AUTOMATIC GLASS FEEDER CO., Ltd., Fishergate, York. March 27, 1933, No. 9179. [Class 56] Relates to a glass-blowing machine of the kind in which a parison mould is mounted on a frame at a constant distance from a vertical column, and a finishing mould is moved radially between the parison mould and a position nearer the column. According to the invention, the finishing mould, and an air cylinder for operating it, are mounted on a carriage which is moved horizontally by a cam acting on a spring-supported block provided on the carriage. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a rotary machine of the suction-gathering type in which a number of mould units, each comprising a parison mould 20 and a finishing mould 10, are mounted on a frame 1 which rotates about a central vertical column 5. The finishing mould of each unit is mounted on a carriage 6 which runs on rails 8, and a spring-supported block 16, mounted on the carriage, carries a roller 17 which runs in a cam track 18 bolted to the column 5. When the machine rotates, the cam 18 draws the carriage 6 towards the column 5, as the mould unit passes the gathering-trough 19, in order that the finishing mould may pass the gathering trough. The finishing mould is opened and closed by an air cylinder 12 mounted on the carriage 6. The parison moulds 20 are opened and closed by air cylinders 22, the mould and cylinder of each unit being mounted on a frame 23 which is raised and lowered by means of a counterbalanced lever 29 operated by a cam 39 secured to the column 5. The position of the parison mould, relatively to the glass in the trough 19, can be adjusted by means of a nut 25 which provides the pivoted connection between the lever 29 and a screwed rod 24 attached to the frame 23. A blowhead mounted above each parison mould comprises a casting 40 secured to the piston rod 41 of an air cylinder 63. The casting has a cylindrical passage 42 Fig. 5, which can be closed by a plate 43 that is movable horizontally by an air cylinder 45. When the passage 42 is opened, a neck-forming plunger 46, carried by the piston rod 47 of an air cylinder 48, moves downward into the ring mould 52, and a disc 49 carried by the rod 47 closes the passage. The holders for the halves of the ring mould 52 slide in guides in the casting 40, and the mould is opened and closed by means of an air cylinder 54 mounted on the casting. The ring mould has projections which engage recesses formed in the parison mould, so that when a closed parison mould is dipped into the glass in the trough 19, it carries with it the blowhead and the piston rod 41. When a parison mould rises after gathering a charge of glass, the plug 46 is lifted out of the ring mould, the plate 43 closes the passage 42, and the charge of glass in the mould is solidified by air applied through the blowhead. The parison mould then opens, the finishing mould 10 moves outwards, and the rod 41 descends and lowers the parison into the finishing mould. When the parison has been blown to its final form, the ring mould opens, the rod 41 rises, and the piston on the rod strikes a screw 61 which limits and adjusts its upward movement. A rod 64, which slides through the screw 61, operates a valve 65 that closes the parison mould. The supply of air for blowing the parisons is controlled by cams 80 arranged in tiers on the top of the column 5, a separate tier being provided for each mould unit. The cams can be changed for other of different outline, to enable the blowing periods of any mould unit to be altered without effecting the periods of the other units. The invention may also be applied to a non-rotary machine comprising a single mould unit, the central column 5 being replaced by a rotating shaft on which the operating cams are mounted. The molten glass may be contained in a receptacle which is moved horizontally to and from the parison mould, as described in Specification 360,442.
