421,562. Glass manufacture. LAWSON, A., and RANKIN AUTOMATIC GLASS FEEDER CO., Ltd., Fishergate, York. March 27, 1933, No. 9178. [Class 56] Relates to a glass-blowing machine of the kind in which a ring mould is moved vertically and is also swung about a vertical axis in order to transfer parisons from a parison mould to a finishing mould that is situated closer to the centre of the machine. According to the invention, the ring mould is moved vertically by an air cylinder, and the swinging movement is effected by the piston of an air cylinder which may be annular in shape. The machine comprises a number of mould units mounted on a table 1, Fig. 1, which rotates continuously about a vertical column 8. Each mould unit comprises a parison mould 18, a finishing mould 3, and a transferring- device. The finishing mould is situated between the parison mould and the column 8, and in such a position that it passes the forehearth or trough 28 into which the parison mould dips to gather charges of molten glass. The finishing mould is opened and closed by an air cylinder 5, and a blowhead 9 is swung on to, and away from, the mould by an air cylinder. The parison mould of each unit is supported on a carriage 27 which is raised and lowered by a lever 29 rocked by a cam 32 on the column 8. The position of the carriage can be adjusted vertically by a nut 35 in order to allow parison moulds of different lengths to be used in each mould unit, and to adjust the position of the mould to suit the level of the glass in the trough 28. The parison mould is opened and closed by an air cylinder 42 operated by an adjustable cam 44 secured to the column 8. The carriage 27 also carries a blowhead 45 which includes an air cylinder 47 for operating the neck-forming plunger. A transfer cylinder 49 is bolted to the blowhead casting 45, and its piston rod 50 carries at its lower end a plate 19 on which the ring mould 17, and an air cylinder 52 for operating it, are mounted. The piston rod 50 has an extension 59 which slides through and rotates with a spur wheel 60 that is engaged by a rack formed integrally with the piston 62 of an air cylinder 61. In a modified construction, a piston 67, Fig. 5, carried by a plate which is splined on the rod 59, slides in a cylinder 65 of semi-circular shape. In each case, movement of the piston 62 or 67 rotates the rod 50 through 180‹ and carries the ring mould from the position shown to a position in line with the finishing mould. At the same time, the rod 50 is lowered by the cylinder 49, thus transferring a parison from the parison mould to the finishing mould. The transferring mechanism can also be used with a non-rotary machine in which a single mould unit is mounted on a stationary bed plate, and the column 8 is replaced by a rotary shaft which carries the operating cams and the valves for distributing compressed air for the different operations.
