Abstract

797,925. Making sliding-clasp fasteners. WAHL, C. M., WAHL, N. A., WAHL, A. B., and WAHL, T. H. March 15, 1955 [March 25, 1954], No. 7583/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups IX and XXII] Sliding-clasp fasteners of the type comprising interlocking coils of filaments (see Specifications 548,819 and 547,663 [both in Group XXV] and U.S.A. Specifications 2,541,729 and 2,541,728) are made by winding two filaments F1, F2, Fig. 15 in opposite directions around a tapered mandrel M, the loops of F1 alternating with and nestling between the loops of F2. Each coil of a winding is laid with a loop thereof over a corresponding loop of the preceding winding lying on the mandrel, while the remaining part of the first-named winding lies beside the remaining part of the second-named winding. The loops are drawn tightly around the mandrel and push the preceding loops along the mandrel and on to a mandrel extension 66 where they are heated in a device H, Fig. 1, to fix them in a permanently coiled form. The interlocked coils travel along the mandrel extension 66 (which is a wire) through curved guides 102 and are taken off at the end 67 of the mandrel. The mandrel is elongated, so that elongated coils are formed. The cross-section of the filaments is semi-circular. The filaments may be of polyamide, polystyrene, P.V.C., cellulose acetate or rubber. The machine shown comprises two spools 25, 30, Fig. 2 (plan view) from which the filaments F1, F2 pass upwardly and under tension to the mandrel M. Spool 25 is secured to a sleeve 22 which rotates clockwise about a centre 17. Spool 30 is secured to a partannular pinion 32 which is disposed above the sleeve 22 and rotates counterclockwise about a centre 31. There is a gap in pinion 32, between G1 and G2, and the post 23a that supports spool 25 and enters and leaves the gap once during every revolution of the post. The (stationary) mandrel is secured to an arm 57 extending from a post 56 disposed between the two centres 17 and 31. Sleeve 22 and pinion 32 are driven from motor 44, which drives also coil take-off rollers 98, 101. The filaments leave the spools by way of a tensioning arrangement (see Group IX).
