Abstract

797,902. Transfers. COMMERCIAL DECAL, Inc. Nov. 11, 1955, No. 32277/55. Class 100(2) A liquid releasable decalcomania comprises a base sheet, a liquid soluble adhesive on the base sheet, a pigment pattern on the adhesive providing a design that is to appear on the surface of the article to which the decalcomania is to be applied, a layer of low melting-point glass containing an addition of at least one metallic oxide dispersed over the pigment, and a protecting coating, e.g., of varnish whereby after application of the decalcomania the article is fired between 1000‹F. and 1500‹F. to fuse the glass layer to form a durable protective coating overlying the design. The metallic oxide may be cadmium oxide, lithium, sodium, calcium, or magnesium oxide. The glass layer is of powdered lead boro-silicate containing one or more of these metallic oxides. The glass may be dusted on to a layer of varnish applied by a lithographic process to the areas it is desired to protect. Alternatively, the glass may be mixed with a liquid and formed into a paste and the paste is then applied to the desired areas through a silk screen. The transfer is applied in wet condition to a previously glazed ceramic article and the paper removed by sliding it from under the coatings.
