Abstract
797,692. Moderating neutrons. MORGAN CRUCIBLE CO., Ltd. July 31, 1956 [Aug. 12, 1955], No. 23340/55. Class 39(4). A reactor shield for moderating and absorbing neutrons is made from a material comprising a boron compound dispersed in graphite. 50 parts of graphite dust finer than 100 mesh and 25 parts coarser than 50 mesh are mixed with 25 parts of pitch or tar and 30 parts of anhydrous borax, cooled, and then gristed or rolled. A block is formed by putting the material into a mould by increments, tamping each layer, then heating to about 1000‹C. to carbonize the binder and to melt the borax without decomposing or volatilizing it. Blocks of the material may be built up to form a wall around a reactor. Between “ per cent and 10 per cent by weight of boron is required for shielding, but less is required to attenuate neutron flux.
