A letter file comprising a back 3, 4, hinged along a folding axis 5 and wire claws 6, which pass through holes in the documents, rigidly connected to plates 7 secured to the parts 3 and 4, is characterized in that coil springs 8, extending along, and attached at their ends to, the parts 3 and 4 are interconnected under initial tension by a member 9 bridging the axis 5 and arranged so as to hold the parts 3 and 4 open when the file is opened and closed when the file is closed.
