Fuel is fed from a hopper to a furnace through a plurality of discharge openings 3, 4, 5, 6 governed respectively by sliding shutters 13, 14, 15, 16 carried on bar 11 reciprocated by nut-andscrew 9, 8, the size of the shutters increasing from 13 to 16 so that, as the bar 11 moves to the right, the openings 3, 4, 5, 6 begin to open sequentially. First, opening 3 begins to open, then opening 4 begins to open, and finally opening 6 begins to open, thus controlling the flow of fuel to the furnace.
