Abstract

797,335. Magnetic compositions. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 9, 1956 [Nov. 29, 1955], No. 34330/56. Class 38 (2). A magnetic fluid for testing ferrous parts for flaws comprises iron oxide particles, a rust inhibitor, a dispersing agent comprising an organic compound having a polyethylene glycol base dispersed in water. The rust inhibitor may be sodium nitrite. The iron oxide is added to the water as a paste containing a watersoluble dispersing agent such as castor oil. Also added to the water may be a non-ionic surface-active agent such as alkyl aryl polyether alcohol which acts as stabilizer to prevent the solution from breaking down, and an antifoam agent.
