Abstract
<PICT:0797096/III/1> In apparatus for detecting the presence of gases which change the colour of a flame of combustible gas, and comprising a burner tube with air ports communicating with a search tube, the air ports are surrounded by a rotatable sleeve connected to a flexible search tube. A suitable apparatus consists of a metal bottle 10 charged with butane gas, and provided with a valve 12 regulating the flow of butane through a jet 13 by a knurled screw 14. A hollow burner tube 16 extends horizontally from the body of the jet to which it is screwed, and is provided with a cylindrical flame cup 17 of greater diameter than the burner tube. A short length of copper tube 18 is let into the flame cup. In the vicinity of the gas jet 13, four air ports 19 are provided in the burner tube, and are surrounded by a rotatable cylindrical sleeve 20, retained in position by an inner flange 22, which engages a reduced part of the burner tube at 21. The apparatus is particularly adapted to detect leakage of halogenated gases from refrigerators. In operation, the open end of the search tube 26 traverses the region of suspect leakage and any gas, e.g. methyl chloride is drawn together with air into the burner tube and effects a change in the colour of the flame emerging from the flame cup. The apparatus may also be used as a blow-lamp, and the cool primary air prevents over-heating of the burner tube and flame cup and the hottest part of the flame extends well beyond the flame cup. In place of butane gas, vaporized paraffin, petrol or coal gas may be used.
