Abstract
A metal catalyst which is readily oxidized by air is converted to a stable form by introducing a small amount of oxygen into an inert atmosphere surrounding the metal to bring about partial oxidation thereof, allowing the heat produced to dissipate, and repeating the steps of oxygen introduction and heat dissipation until the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere surrounding the metal has increased to 1 per cent by volume. The heat may be dissipated by passing a coolant liquid around the vessel containing the catalyst. Activity of the partially oxidized catalyst may be restored by treatment with hydrogen at 47-85 DEG C. An example describes the treatment of a reduced nickel catalyst.
