Abstract

796,409. Washing coal. AUTOMATIC COAL CLEANING CO., Ltd. Dec. 28, 1955 [Sept. 17, 1954], No. 27014/54. Class 82(2) A system for controlling coal washboxes comprises a plurality of fluid-operated valves (3a &c.) for regulating the removal of discard from a coal washbox, a governor (4) responsive to the quantity of discard material in the washbox, and a pilot valve (2) for the automatic control of the fluid supply to the said 'regulating valves, the governor being operatively connected to the pilot valve so that the indications imparted by the governor to the pilot valve control the pressure of the fluid supply for operating the said regulating valves. In the Fig. shown, air under pressure is fed to pilot valve 2 from a supply 1; a governor 4 is connected, e.g. via a cam or diaphragm, to the valve 2 which may be of the kind described in Specification 722,993 [Group XXIX] and which controls the supply of air to the discard regulating valves 3a &c. situated in the discharge compartment and controlling the flow of air between such compartment and atmosphere. The wash-box itself may be operated via valve 7 by air from vent 1 or by a separate fluid supply, water being supplied at 8 and raw coal at 9. Pulsation of water in compartments 11 stratifies the coal &c., shale being discharged between gates 15, 16. Valves 3a &c. control the air outlet from discharge chamber 17 to atmosphere; closure of 3a &c. suppresses the pulsations of water between the said gates and stops shale discharge, whereas their opening permits both pulsation and discharge. Governor 4 responds to the thickness of shale layer 14, so actuating the pilot valve 2 and air supply to the valves 3a &c. as to open the latter and allow shale discharge when the layer 14 increases, and vice versa, so as to maintain a substantially constant shale layer. A recorder 6 of air supply pressure fluctuations may be calibrated in terms of tonnage of material extracted or any other faction of the degree of valve (3a &c.) opening.
