Abstract

796,151. Steering vehicles. ROLLO, J. M. March 14, 1956 [Dec. 15, 1954], No. 36392/54. Class 79(5) [Also in. Group XXXII] A rack and pinion steering mechanism in a motor vehicle comprises an oblong casing 1 mounted on the chassis-frame 2 and containing a rack 10 which engages intermediate its ends, a pinion 11 fixed to the steering column 12, and at each end a pinion 9 fixed to an L-shaped king pin 5 extending through registering upstanding and depending bearings 3, 4, and operatively connected at the lower extremity 6 to the stub axle 7 of a front wheel 8. In the preferred embodiment, the rack 10 is cut transversely towards one end, the two portions being joined by a screw threaded member 13 which when rotated enables the wheels 8 to be aligned by varying the effective rack length. The pinion 11 is of smaller diameter than the pinion 9 thus producing a steering reduction ratio. The casing 1 contains oil or grease, and dust is excluded therefrom by rubber bellows 19 attached to each of the bearings 3, 4. The upper ends of the king pins engage thrust pads 16 which bear on the ends of a semi-elliptical spring 17 which is pivoted at 18a to the chassis-frame 2, thus permitting relative vertical movement of the wheels 8 without deflection of the spring.
