Abstract

A decorative effect is produced on pliable sheet material that has pronounced projections and cavities by depositing metal thereon from the vapour state in a high vacuum. the metal vapour impinging on the surface of the material at an angle of substantially less than 90 degrees to the surface so that a greater amount of metal is deposited on one side of the projections than on the other side. Two different metals may be successively deposited, the first at an angle of 90 degrees and the other at an acute angle of, say, 15-50 degrees, or alternatively, at opposite slants when opposite sides of the projections are locally coated with each metal. Materials which may be coated are textile fabrics, particularly those which have been dyed and which consist of cellulosic, animal or synthetic fibres, paper, leather and plastic foils. The projections and cavities may be obtained by local shrinking or embossing. The adhesion of the metal coating may be enhanced by subsequent heating. The examples disclose the embossing &c. and coating of cotton percale, cotton satin, silk repp, nylon toile, and polyvinyl chloride foil, with various metals. Specifications 774,439 and 796,138 are referred to.
