Abstract
In a process for the vacuum deposition of metal or other material on a carrier web, the web, before the deposition, is coated or impregnated with a resinous material which exhibits an affinity for both the web and the material to be deposited thereon, and dried; and, before and/or after the deposition, is calendered. The vacuum depositable material may be aluminium, copper, or a high vacuum vaporizable dyestuff. After the deposition the web may be coated or impregnated with a resinous material, e.g. a synthetic resin adhesive. The resinous material may be an isocyanate-modified polyester, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetal, a dimethylolurea resin, a cross-linked polyurethane, an aminoplast, a phenol or cresol resin or a silicone resin. The web may be of polyacrylonitrile, polyamide, polyethyleneglycol-terephthalate, viscose, cellulose acetate, glass fibres, or of natural fibre, e.g. cotton. The resinous material may be applied as a solution by dipping, spraying, or brushing, or as a thin preformed sheet. The drying may be carried out in vacuo, optionally with a simultaneous heat treatment, or may be followed by treatment in vacuo. Heating may be effected with super-heated steam at a temperature of 170 DEG C. The resinous material may also be applied in vacuo, optionally by vapour deposition. One or more layers of resinous or vacuum depositable material may be applied. Layers of resinous and vacuum depositable material may be applied alternately. The web may be treated in vacuo while being would from one spool to another one or more times.
