Claims (3)

1. WE CLAIM 1, A flexible semi-permeable tubular assembly . which consists essentially of a cord comprising a textile sheath which carries a semi-permeable membrane, said sheath being composed of yarns, the external surface of the sheath being compressed and flattened, the internal surface of the sheath defining an axial channel v/hich communicates with the exterior.
2. , An assembly according to claim 1, in which the cross-sections of the textile sheath are substantially circular, 3, An assembly according to claim 1 or 2, in which the yarns, fibres or filaments at the exterior surface of the sheath are bent over on the latter, h . An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims which has an external diameter, excluding the membrane, of between 1 and 10 mm. 5, An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims in which the ratio of the external diameter to the internal diameter of the hollow cord is between 2 and 5. 6, An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the hollow cord consists of several compressed concentric textile layers, 7, An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims in which the hollow cord consists of one or more textile layers of knitted, braided, woven or non-woven fabrics, the layers being the same or different. - - 8. An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims in which the membrane covers a heat-shrunk hollow cord, 9. An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims in which the membrane covers a hollow cord impregnated with a resin. 10. An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims in which the hollow cord comprises yarns previously impregnated with a resin. 11. An assembly according to claim 9 or 10 in which the resin is a phenolic, polyester or epoxy resin. 12. An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims in which the sheath is made from polypropylene yarn. 1
3. An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims in which the membrane is of cellulose acetate. 1¾. An assembly according to claim 1 substantially as hereinbefore described, 15. An assembly according to claim 1 substantially as described in any one of the Examples. 16, Process for the preparation of an assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims which comprises smoothing the external surface of a hollow textile cord by passing it through at least one convergent ernal a semi-permeable membrane. 17. Process according to claim 16, in which the convergent tube or tubes are heated to a temperature which causes the yarn and/or the fibres of the cord to soften. 18. Process according to claim 16 or 17, in which the compressed cord is covered with a film-forming solution which, after evaporation of the solvent, forms a semi-permeable membrane. 19. Process according to any one of claims 16 to 18 in which the hollow cord is heat-shrunk by passing it through a zone which is at a temperature which is sufficient to cause the heat-shrinkable yarns and/or fibres present in the cord to soften. 20. Process according to any one of claims 16 to 19 in which the cord is impregnated with a resin and dried, and then the resin is cured, 21. Process according to claim 20 in which the cord is smoothed before and after the deposition, drying and curing & Lhiu-miimin-. ΰ ΐ sdt. . 22. Process according to claim 16 substantially as hereinbefore described. 23. Process according to claim 16 substantially as described in any one of the Examples. 2h. An assembly as defined in claim 1 whenever prepared by a process as claimed in any one of claims 16 to 23* - - 25, A method of purifying or concentrating a fluid by reverse osmosis, ultra-filtration or gas permeation in which the fluid is contacted with an assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 15 and 2k. 26. Apparatus for purifying or concentrating a fluid by reverse osmosis, ultra-filtration or gas permeation in which the membrane is an assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 15 and 2k,
