Abstract

1,256,491. Membrane assembly; reverse osmosis. PORTALS Ltd., A. J. TOOTH and J. A. THORP. 9 Dec., 1968 [12 Sept.; 1967], No. 41638/67. Heading B1X. [Also in Division F2] A semi-permeable membrane assembly for use in reverse osmosis comprises a multi-ply, elongated porous tube constructed from a porous fibrous tape or tapes and having a semipermeable reverse osmosis membrane as an inner or innermost ply. The tape or tapes may be of paper reinforced or made solventresistant with a resinous material, e.g. phenol formaldehyde, melamine formaldehyde, or an epoxwy resin, in an amount of from 2 to 10% or up to 50% by weight of the dry weight of the paper. The membrane may be covered by removable layers of for example calcium alginate or polyethylene oxide and the membrane may be of a modified cellulose acetate. The tube is made by winding the tape or tapes in a spiral tube windup machine. Glass fibre tissue and mats may be incorporated in the tubes, the tissue and mats being impregnated with a heat curable epoxy resin. The membrane may be applied by showing a bob supporting the membrane material through a wound tube. Six examples of multi-ply porous tubes are disclosed. With reference to Fig. 1, the porous tubes 10 are connected in parallel in an apparatus solution to be treated passing into the apparatus at 31 under pressure and the treated solution being withdrawn at 32. In a further construction an assembly of porous tubes may be connected in parallel or series by the use of different end caps (Figs. 2, 3, not shown). The tubes may depend from a sealing plate, the ends of the tubes remote therefrom being sealed by end caps (Figs. 4, 5, not shown).
