Abstract
1,265,835. Reinforced laminates. UPJOHN CO. 14 Oct., 1969 [21 Oct., 1968], No. 50418/69. Heading B5N. In a laminate comprising a cellular polyurethane core bonded between fibre-reinforced non-cellular resin outer layers, a plurality of fibre-reinforced non-cellular resin struts, integral with the outer layers, pass through the core. The laminate is made by forming apertures through the core and simultaneously or successively passing fibrous wicks, in the form of one or more strands, therethrough, e.g. by needling or stiching. The fibrous reinforcements for the outer layers, e.g. woven sheets, chopped fibres or paper, are applied either before the apertures are formed or after the wicks have been inserted in the core. A single wick may be passed through all the apertures. Resin is then applied, to form the outer layers and reinforcing struts. The struts may be perpendicular or at an angle to the faces. Examples of fibrous reinforcements and resins are given; preferably glass-fibre reinforced polyester is used.
