[Also in Group XII] Apparatus in which two immiscible liquids of different densities, e.g. gasoline and water, are brought into intimate contact with each other has a column 10 with spaced perforated plates 14 supporting the denser liquid descending the column through the perforations of the plates and conduits 11 for the passage of the lighter liquid up the column successively through each area between two plates 14, each conduit 11 having an inner chamber 12 with an open end adjacent the bottom of the conduit and apertured at its upper end to communicate with the main part of the conduit, the cross-sectional area of the apertures being less than the cross-sectional area of the chamber and the arrangement such that the lighter liquid rising up the column passes through the chambers 12 into the conduits 11 free from entrained particles of the denser liquid. In a modification the conduit 11 is cylindrical and the chamber 12 is of annular cross-section and defined between the inner wall of the conduit and a central pipe, which is apertured at its lower end, in this apparatus the lighter liquid passes up the column through the perforations of the plates and the denser liquid descends the column through the conduits.
