Abstract

<PICT:0795137/III/1> <PICT:0795137/III/2> <PICT:0795137/III/3> Spoilage of food by micro-organisms is delayed by maintaining the food in a moist, cool, positively ionized atmosphere. The apparatus of Figs. 1 and 2 is a domestic refrigerator in which a thermally non-conductive barrier 18 separates an upper freezing compartment 16 from a lower food storage compartment 17 cooled to 38-40 DEG F. by a plate evaporator 21, both compartments being closed by an insulated door 19. In the compartment 17 is a high-humidity compartment 25 closed by doors 31. In the compartment 25 are drawers 29, a wire-type shelf 30, and a device 32 for the emission of positive atmospheric ions. The device 32 (Fig. 3) may comprise polonium 210 mounted at 33 in a metal tube 34 having an electrically non-conductive coating 35 and a source 37 of potential (300 v.) for maintaining an electrostatic field between the metal of the tube and earth, negatively charged ions produced in the tube moving to the positively charged metal and positively charged ions moving out of the tube into the compartment 25.
