Abstract

794,671. Jointing by rolling; making nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 28, 1956 [June 30, 1955], No. 19007/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A sheath of zirconium or its alloy is bonded to a core of fissile-bearing metal or alloy by hot rolling at 550-650‹ C. in the absence of an oxidizing atmosphere. A rod of alloy containing 20 per cent uranium is cleaned by scratch brushing and clad in a sheath of zirconium which has been cleaned by shot blasting and chemical etching. The element is then sheathed in copper and the assembly evacuated and heated to 550‹ C. for rolling.
