Abstract
794,631. Capacitors. FANSTEEL METALLURGICAL CORPORATION. April 20,1956, No. 12160/56. Class 37. Electrical apparatus containing a liquid comprises a ductile metal housing having an opening bounded by a shoulder extending outwardly from the side wall to a wall portion the free edge of which is curled inwardly to provide an annular toroidal flange and a conducting disc clamped between two insulating rings, the outer being relatively resilient, which are compressed between the shoulder and the toroidal flange. As shown, a case 9 for an electrolytic capacitor is hermetically sealed by two rings 16, 17, one of which is recessed to take a tantalum disc 11 which carries the porous sintered tantalum anode 14. The inner ring 16, which is inert to the electrolyte (40 per cent sulphuric acid) 15, may be of mica or one of the polyethylene compounds. The outer seal 17 (of synthetic rubber) is compressed against the disc 11 by rolling in the case edge 20; a metal ring 21 being interposed to even the pressure. Annular ribs 23, 24 are provided in the disc 11 and the case 9 to improve the seal. The case 9, which acts as cathode, is drawn from silver or tantalum or silver with an inner coating of tantalum. Embodiments are described without the ring 21 and without ribs 23, 24.
