Abstract
675,353. Electric condensers. PLESSEY CO., Ltd. (Mallory & Co., Inc., P. R.). Nov. 28, 1950, No. 29060/50. Class 37. An electrolytic condenser has the case acting as cathode, a tantalum anode, and a gasket sealing the case. As shown in Fig. 1, the cathode consists of a silver container 24 threaded to receive a cap 30; the anode consists of a disc 51 of tantalum carrying a pellet 15 of pressed and sintered tantalum powder; an hermetic seal is effected by a gasket of, e.g. polytetra-fluoroethylene polymer, which is pressed between the rim 33 of the cathode container, the bent-over anode disc 51, a steel ring 40 for providing a lead, and the cap 30. The electrolyte is 39 per cent H 2 SO 4 . The anode is electroformed to 120 v., D.C. at 135‹ C. in 60 per cent H 2 SO 4 and then to 120 v., D.C. at 200‹ C. in 40 per cent H 2 SO 4 . In Fig. 3 the cathode case 62 is of steel lined with silver, and is crimped to the anode cap 76 as shown. In Fig. 4 the anode 83 has a cylindrical portion 90 of sintered material, and the cathode 81 is of silver-lined steel and is crimped over the anode and contact ring 89, the gasket 87 extending over the depth of the unit.
