Abstract
794,299. Coiling helically jointed tubes. HETEKA OY. April 23, 1956 [Nov. 2, 1955], No. 12348/56. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a pipe-making machine in which metallic strip material 2 is coiled helically on a rotatable mandrel 1 and the edges of the coils are joined together, e.g. by interlocking or welding, a guide band 9, both ends of which are secured at positions 4, 12 on the same side of the mandrel 1, is arranged parallel to the feed strip 2 and is then tensioned over the first coil of the strip on the mandrel so that the strip is held firmly against the mandrel on both sides of the region in which jointing of the edges occurs. As shown, the edges of the strip 2 are folded first by rolls. 10, 11 and then by rolls 7, 8 so that the edges of the coils can be interlocked, a roll 6 with concave rim effecting the final pressing down of the joined edges. The guide band 9, of thin steel strip, is fixed at one end to an adjustable part of the feed rolls mechanism 4 of the strip 2 and at the other end to an adjustable slide 13. The rolls 7 are adjustable along the axis of the pipe and the roll 6, the concave surface of which may be grooved, is adjustable towards or away from the pipe. The edges of the strip material 2 may be joined by butt- or lap-welding instead of interlocking.
