In a work bench having a horizontal surface 11 supported by legs 12, a storage space is provided in the form of a frame 13 containing shelves, trays, cupboards or the like supported for vertical movement between a retracted position in which the top of the frame lies adjacent the working surface 11 and a raised position in which the storage space extends above the level of the working surface. The retractable storage unit 13 is provided with runners or guides 25 which coact with runners or guides 26 on the bench structure. The weight of the frame is counterbalanced by weights 27 connected to each end of the unit 13 by wire connections 28 passing over pulleys 29, Fig. 3. Turn buttons 32 are provided to secure the unit 13 in the retracted position. This enables balancing weights to be used which overbalance the unit when empty. The unit 13 may be provided adjacent the back edge of the work surface 11, Fig. 1. When the bench is used in a corner between two walls the unit may be provided adjacent the side of the bench where it abuts the wall. Additional storage space may be provided in the form of a locker 14 pivotally mounted so that one of its walls forms a vertical side to the work bench when the locker is closed. The locker is counterbalanced and biased towards the closed position. Drawers 16 and shelves 19 are also provided. A section 21 of the working surface 11 may be hinged to be swung upwardly to provide access to shallow storage trays.
