Abstract
794,192. Protractors. MIDULLA, B. Oct. 12, 1954 [Oct. 12, 1953], No. 29390/54. Class 97(3) A .drawing instrument has a straight side having a linear scale 1 and a cut out area one edge of which is marked with an angular scale 6 having the same markings and directed in the same sense as the scale 1, the centre 5 of the angular scale being marked on the instrument and being the mid-point of the hypotenuse of a right angled triangle which has the said straight side as one of its sides, the base line of the angular scale lying on the said hypotenuse and intersecting the straight side at the origin 3 of the linear scale. The instrument itself may comprise the said right-angled triangle, as shown, or it may be of any shape, preferably triangular, and the said right-angled triangle may not be completely within the instrument, it being necessary only for the hypotenuse and its centre 5 to be marked and the scale 1 to be one side of the instrument. Various other triangular instruments are shown. The scales 1, 6 are such that the length of an arc of the circle circumscribing the right-angle triangle, which. arc extends from the origin 3 to any radius through 5, is equal to the length of the side 1 from the origin 3 to a point thereon having the same marking as the value of the angle between the said radius and the hypotenuse as shown on the angular scale. The instrument may include a line 4 making an angle of 27‹ 35' 49" with the hypotenuse, which line is used for determining the length of the side of a square of area equivalent to the area of a given circle.
