Abstract
5088. Boult, A. J., [Farini, P.]. March 8. Squares; protractors; scales.-A drawing-square, which may have a semicircular aperture cut out and graduated as a protractor, and a scale along its hypotenuse, has its dimensions such as to allow various calculations to be performed practically and graphically; for example, describing a square equal in area to a given circle or ellipse, finding the straight line equal to the circumference or arc of a circle, &c. The square A B C is constructed so that the projections of the sides upon the hypotenuse A B are respectively A D = 2r, B D = r#/2, from which it follows that the perpendicular C D = r ##. The perpendicular is therefore the side of the square equal to the area of the circle whose diameter is A B or 2r, and B D is the length of a quadrant of that circle. In making the instrument, # is taken correctly to five places of decimals.
